Guys Caught For Selling Modified Xbox Consoles

Three guys - two of which were store owners - were arrested for modifying and selling Xbox consoles that allowed gamers to play pirated games. The guys added control chips and also a 250-GB hard drive to the Xbox, allowing the installation of about 80 pirated games to the console. That’s roughtly $3,000 in games. Damn, too bad I didn’t get my hands on one before. I mean, those bad, bad men. How dare they break the law like that.
Jones, Bryant and Cai are charged with a felony count of conspiracy to commit copyright infringement and to violate the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. A hearing is scheduled in federal court in Los Angeles in late January.
This case began when the Entertainment Software Alliance contacted federal law enforcement and reported that undercover private investigators had purchased a modified Xbox game console, pre-loaded with several copyrighted games, from ACME Game Store in May 2005.
The cops are still in search of all the other Mod Gods out there. So if you are one, watch out. To catch these guys, they went undercover as customers. No one is safe.

That was my first thought, as well, but perhaps it isn’t in some cases. Perhaps a lawyer in the audience can settle this matter :)

Someone in Australia got sued for modding a Playstation, but the judge ruled in his favour saying there is nothing illegal about modding.

It’s if you then go and acquire/use/distribute pirated stuff that you are a naughty boy.

I love our modded Xbox. Games load faster, save faster, run faster. It’s great. We just put in the game CD, rip it to the disk and then never need it again.

racking? Tracking?? I hope it’s ‘tracking’, else there’s a whole new language out there on computer land I’m totally unaware of :)
Me naughty? Never? Well there was that one time I copied… ;)
Actually I live a sad life - I don’t have anything pirated or modded. The most daring thing I do is copy the CD’s for backup purposes!
