There’s nothing to fear but F.E.A.R. itself

by Ingrid on September 22nd, 2005

My friend Matt asked me the other day to try the demo for F.E.A.R. He is often trying to sway me away from the evils of MMORPGs and over to the Greatness of FPS. I wish him luck in that venture. But because I am always open to new things, I agreed to try the demo.

Here is what I learned while playing First Encounter Assault Recon:

1. I can’t shoot things very well.
2. When I do manage to hit something (strictly by chance), I apologize for killing it. Aloud.
3. I scream at the screen a lot more than usual (and that is saying a lot).
4. After a while, I no longer apologize for killing things, and actually get giddy from it.
5. I then start yelling things like, “HA! Take THAT, you ugly….thingie!”
6. It’s fun to shoot things … even if I suck at it.

Overall, my impression of F.E.AR. was a positive one. I had a lot of fun, despite my initial frustrations at being no good at it, which I imagine poses no problems for those aficionados of the First Person Shooter genre. I thought the graphics were beautiful. In particular, I liked the way the blood splattered. So pretty.

Um.

I believe the word I’m looking for is, “anyway…”

The full version of the game will be out in October, and you can try the demo out for yourself at the official F.E.A.R. website. If you like FPS, you should definitely try it. Actually, you should try it anyway, because free stuff is good.

I think now I need to go play something happy and non-violent. Like GTA…

Hahah. Killing things is great fun! Especially in games. Because then it’s not illegal. I thoroughly enjoyed the demo and am looking forward to the full game. They’re also having a multiplayer beta and I’m interested to see how the game handles that way. If you thought killing things was fun, just wait until you can kill your friends!

You know, just this morning I was thinking, “Hm, I sure don’t get to kill my friends enough.” So I’m very glad you brought this to my attention. ;)

[…] A couple of days ago, I mentioned trying the single-player demo of the soon-to-be released, FPS game First Encounter Assault Recon (F.E.A.R.), and today Joystiq reports that the multi-player demo will be released on the 29th of September, at approximately 8am Pacific. […]

[…] F.E.A.R. demo (PC): I didn’t get F.E.A.R. for Christmas after all, so I guess I’ll go pick it up sometime next month. FPS games are not my genre, but I have to say this demo made me question why. Sure I sucked at it. But I had a lot of fun, and I’m certain with a little practice, I’ll actually hit things. […]
